Justification:  The island is an RLI owned asset available for use by ALL members of RLI.  The island is located in an area of the lake which is subject to erosion from boat wakes.  The increasing number of wake board boats has intensified the wakes which strike the island, and therefore the erosion.  (Click here for pictures) The island is used by many to socialize at, and is also used for the RLI fireworks display, Hot Dog Roast, Night of Music, Lobster Cookout, and other activities.

There are arguably three (3) options to consider (to be discussed in detail during the special meeting):

  1. Continue with periodic maintenance only.  Unfortunately, periodic maintenance is becoming more demanding and less effective with the intensified boat wakes.  One might argue the minimum required action to allow continued safe use of the island is substantially similar to option 3 below.

  2. Protect the island by surrounding it with a structural seawall, either of steel or vinyl.   This would also include adding fill to eroded areas of the island, drainage provisions, replacing the existing dock, and adding steps to access the island from the west side.  Rip rap (natural stone) would be added in front of the seawall to comply with MDEQ requirements and to reduce backwash caused by wakes hitting the seawall. It is estimated this option would cost between $40 - $50k.  This option is subject to a permit being issued by the MDEQ.

  3. Enhance or replace the existing rip rap (concrete around the island) by removing the concrete in the east side, adding fill as needed, adding filter fabric to minimize erosion, and replacing the concrete with natural stone.  Additional fill would then be brought in to repair eroded areas of the island, and the existing dock would be replaced. It is estimated this option may cost as little as $20k.  This option is subject to a permit being issued by the MDEQ.

Note the erosion which is occurring approximately 2 - 3 feet to the right of the dock.

Note the erosion (sink holes)

Note the heaving of the dock and separation of the platform resulting from erosion and soil shifting
