Fishing on Runyan Lake is governed by state of Michigan fishing regulations.

Michigan Fishing License Requirements (see DNR page)

  • You must purchase a license if you are 17 years of age or older. If you are under 17, you may fish without a license, but you are required to observe all fishing rules and regulations.
  • When fishing, you must carry your license and the identification used to purchase that license and exhibit both upon demand of a Michigan Conservation Officer, a Tribal Conservation Officer or any law enforcement officer.
  • Your fishing license is valid from March 1 of a given year through March 31 of the following year.

What fish are in Runyan Lake?
Fish populations in Runyan Lake include Black Crappie, Bluegill/Sunfish, Largemouth and Rock Bass, Lake Herring, Longnose Gar, Northern Pike, Yellow Perch, Walleye, and of course bait fish.  You might also see Iowa and Johnny Darters, a Bowfin (Dogfish), or a Mudpuppy now and then.  Having trouble identifying a fish?  Think you saw or caught something else?  Try this fish identification tool.

Fish Study Support
Dr. David Jude would like to use the fishing contest as a data collection point for the fish study. What he needs is scales from the fish, the stomach (from the dead ones), the type of fish, Size (Length & Weight if you can provide it). Place this data on a zip lock storage bag and freeze it. We will arrange pick up after the fishing contest (maybe the day of the awards ceremony or we will provide a contact).  Thank you!
